Nan Goldin

Self portrait- After being beaten by her husband
Goldin allows the audience into her private life, evoking emotion within us and making us respond in a sincere way. Despite the obvious trauma, she has this air of confidence and represents a strong fighting female. She has still used a snapshot like ascetic which links in well with the rest of her work. This image helps me in my project as it shows me that I can include self portraits or images related to me, making my work more personal. This image is set up but it still has a strong element of 'The Real' which is extremely fascinating. It's as though someone has taken this picture of her, rather than her choosing to show this herself.

Natural shots of close friends and family - Goldins images were taken to preserve the memories of her closest friends, as she considered them as her close family.  They have a personal feel to them which is an aspect I want to explore within this private feel brief.  It's images like this that I would like to try to take and possibly display in a diary layout or even have them as Polaroid displaying a name, date and time. This would add to the personal element of the project and images, it links them all together and creates a clear connection with the photographer.

I picked these images in particular as each one of them shows the different elements I want to portray in my own work. This sense of 'intruding' on your friends social, intimate etc moments.
