In
this module the intention is for you to produce a public exhibition
of your work. This will be, probably, a first experience for you of
showing your work to the general public and of organising and running
a photography exhibition. This will be a ‘real’ experience for
you and one that takes a lot of preparation and planning and picture
making. The nature of the work you plan to exhibit will be for you to
negotiate and determine. The aim is for you to build upon the
research and practice that you engaged in the first term, where you
were experimenting and trying to establish and identify a practice of
your own. In this module you will be developing your own ideas to
produce a body of work that is still experimental but will attempt to
be appropriate and effective to exhibit to an audience. The important
thing is for you to fully engage in the process but not to feel too
restricted by deadline and exhibition pressure. So experiment, try
new things and be willing to make mistakes!
" The
title of the module includes the idea of showing work that might have
some aspect of a ‘private feel’. You do not have to make work
that is private, and private can mean very different things to
different people, but you might like to use the this term as a
starting point to make work and see how it develops. Contained within
the title is the ambition to look generally at how to make work for
public display; what might be the critical and visual aspects and
concerns, what are the production requirements and what defines wall
based work as compared to other areas of practice. "
You
will need to engage in a good deal of visual research, picture taking
and production planning and this will be presented and discussed in
the class in our group meetings. In these meetings we will look at a
range of contemporary exhibition work and analyse how this work is
articulated and presented. We will also be looking at how well you
are making pictures. Are your pictures making skills appropriate for
what you want to achieve? What areas can you improve?
There
will be some deadline points where you will be expected to produce
and present your visual research/practice. These are designed to make
sure that you use your time productively. I would like you to go and
see a lot of exhibitions and there will be at least 1 London trip.
The trip to London will also include a visit to the Print Space,
which is an excellent hands-on printing facility, where we will also
look at a range of print, mounting and framing materials.
